Year 8 Biology1 hour per week · Ecosystems and living processes

Learn how organisms function, interact and respond to their environment. Biology starts with habitats, food chains, food webs, competition, adaptations and biodiversity, then develops photosynthesis, respiration, gas exchange and exercise.

  • Skills: scientific vocabulary, diagrams, retrieval, measurement, interpreting evidence and explaining processes.
  • Projects: an ecosystem in a bottle, a photosynthesis investigation and a biodiversity study.
  • Assessment: practical work, teacher questions and mastery quizzes.

Year 8 Chemistry1 hour per week · Reactions, materials and Earth

Explore elements, compounds, mixtures, physical and chemical changes, reactants, products, word equations, combustion and oxidation. Continue with acids, alkalis, indicators, pH, neutralisation, metals and carbonates. Earth science includes rocks, the rock cycle, weathering, the atmosphere and the carbon cycle.

  • Skills: careful observation, fair tests, recording results, scientific calculations and evaluating evidence.
  • Projects: reaction investigations, material testing and a sustainable-material recommendation.
  • Assessment: practical records, short explanations and mastery questions.

Year 8 Physics1 hour per week · Waves and electricity

Investigate how waves transfer energy, including amplitude, wavelength, frequency, sound, hearing, reflection, refraction and colour. Study charge, current, voltage, resistance, circuit symbols, series and parallel circuits, magnets, magnetic fields and electromagnets.

  • Skills: drawing circuits, using measurements, explaining observations and solving numerical problems.
  • Projects: a sound investigation, a working circuit and an electromagnet challenge.
  • Assessment: practical investigation, calculations and mastery quizzes.

Year 8 Mathematics2 hours per week · Fluency and reasoning

Develop directed-number, fraction, decimal and percentage skills alongside powers, roots, index laws, BODMAS, algebra, ratio and proportion. Explore geometry, perimeter, area, volume, probability, coordinates, gradients, straight-line graphs and sequences. Apply decimal calculations to finance and data handling; study rounding, truncation, error intervals and “un-rounding”.

  • Lesson pattern: retrieval, explanation, guided examples, independent practice, reasoning and exit assessment.
  • Applications: financial decisions, shape design, experimental probability and multi-step problems.
  • Assessment: fluency, written reasoning and spaced review.

GCSE Statistics Foundation Bridge1.5 hours per week · GCSE grades 2–4

Progress from collecting reliable data to interpreting GCSE-style questions. Study data types, populations and samples, sampling bias, questionnaires, frequency tables, charts, averages, range and estimated means. Extend to probability, relative frequency, sample spaces, two-way tables, scatter graphs, correlation, time series and comparing distributions.

  • Level 2: read and calculate accurately.
  • Level 3: choose and apply a method in context.
  • Level 4: compare results and justify conclusions.
  • Project: plan, collect, present, analyse and evaluate a statistical investigation.

Year 8 Geography2 hours per week · Places and environments

Examine development, global inequality and the changing economies and populations of Asia. Investigate coastal processes and management, weather and climate, extreme weather, tropical rainforests, hot deserts, climate change, population, resources and sustainability.

  • Skills: maps, photographs, geographical data, case studies, enquiry and extended writing.
  • Projects: a local-area enquiry, coastal-management decision and climate-data investigation.
  • Assessment: explain processes, compare places and evaluate solutions.

French A1–A21.5 hours per week · Communication

Develop from CEFR A1 towards A2 through conversations about personal information, family, school, hobbies, routine, food, health, travel, holidays and plans. Build present-tense grammar, être, avoir, negatives, questions, agreement, modal verbs, the near future and an introduction to the perfect tense.

  • Skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and pronunciation.
  • Activities: role-play, teacher conversation, short texts and vocabulary practice.
  • Target: a short conversation and an organised 80–120-word passage.

Technology Grades 7–91.5 hours per week · Design and engineering

Follow the South African CAPS technological process: investigate, design, make, evaluate and communicate. Study structures, forces, loads, triangulation and technical drawing; levers, gears, pulleys, cams and cranks; material properties and processing; and low-voltage circuits, switches, LEDs, resistors and simple controls.

  • Practical work: around half of the course involves designing, making and testing.
  • Projects: model bridge, mechanical device, electrical product and Smart Eco House.
  • Assessment: research, design, construction, testing, improvement and presentation.
